This course is equivalent to 600 hours of study and includes a manageable assessment task of either a traditional dissertation or the production of a focused article of high quality. APEL accreditation is awarded solely at the discretion of the Course Leader. Students will then 'top up' these credit points with a dissertation or article, studied and completed by distance learning, to gain the LLM degree. The course will also count Acquired Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), which in this case must be no less than 2 years verified professional experience as a qualified legal professional which can account for two-thirds of the LLM. The LLM Legal Practice DL is available to individuals who have either undertaken and passed the UK Legal Practice Course (LPC), the Barristers Training Course (BTC), their precursors, equivalent professional certifications in non-UK jurisdictions, or the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme certification (QLTS). Nottingham Law School provides an LLM (Masters in Law) award through distance learning to “top-up” professional legal qualifications or experience. NTU offers experienced practioners who are knowledgeable about their areas of law which is essential for the BPTC.100% of LLM Legal Practice (DL) students are in high-skilled jobs within 15 months after graduation (Graduate Outcomes Survey, 2020/21). How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer? Otherwise, the practical elements are much more enjoyable, as opposed to the black letter aspects of my law degree. However, there is no such luck on the BPTC where you need to know every aspect of each subject to succeed. At Undergraduate level I was able to select topics to learn from the exams. The BPTC is definitely an intense course. How did you find the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study? I think that NTU is often underplayed because it is a polytechnic university rather than a Russel Group the fact is NTU is a very professional environment with top tier facilities that has won numerous awards in recent years for it’s standards in teaching. However, fortunately, I was awarded a substantial scholarship from the Inner Temple which funded the course.ĭoes the “real” NTU match what you’d imagined? How does it compare with your friends experience at other universities? I did not know if it would be possible to undertake the BPTC on a full-time basis due to the costs involved. I have a keen interest in Criminal Law and the way to undertake such advocacy is as a barrister. Why did you make the decision to study the BPTC?įor myself, traditional advocacy is at its height in the Magistrates and Crown Courts. This means that I knew the city well and knew a bit about NTU from my participation in the Pathways to Law programme which I undertook during my A-Levels to gain an understanding unto university and a law degree. I chose to study the BPTC at Nottingham Law School as I undertook my degree at the University of Nottingham. Why did you choose to study the BPTC at Nottingham Law School? I chose the subjects on my law degree, as far as possible, to reflect this. I have a keen interest in laws which are people focused. I chose to study law to learn the skills to advocate for those who are not able to advocate for themselves.
